Get Outdoors and Run Wild with Bradford’s First Overnight Forest School

11th May 2015

In and amongst the woodland of Blackhills just outside Bradford, you might just hear the sound of some wild creatures this summer. Enjoying the freedom of the woods, adventurous 10-15 year olds will be learning skills, making new friends and letting their imaginations run wild as they are supervised by an expert team of forest school leaders. There will be games, challenges and plenty of free time to explore the extensive woodland at Blackhills camp.

Local social enterprise Get Out More CIC have been running forest schools in the area for over 5 years and director Annie Berrington knows the woods she works in like the back of her hand.

Annie says “ Get Out More forest school involves problem solving, managed risk taking, creativity and co-operation through a mix of games, creative and adventurous activities, learning and reflection. Our holiday programmes are really popular so we have started some weekend programmes for older kids too. They have asked us over and over to put on an overnight camp so this is our first one and I believe the first one in the city. “Young people will be putting up their own tents, cooking all their meals over a campfire and putting into practice some of the outdoor and bushcraft skills they have learnt at forest school so this is the natural next step for a lot of our intrepid Get Out More children.”

As well as den building, woodland craft and games, there will be a campfire for cooking meals and of course some marshmallows.

Parents who have sent their children on the holiday forest school’s before have been full of praise:

“My son loved the two days – this was his first time at Forest School and asks when he can go again! He came back filthy with big red cheeks and to me that’s a great sign of enjoyment!”

“T loves going to forest school! In fact it is the only activity he asks to do in the holidays away from myself. It is always good to get children into the fresh air and doing exercise and I feel that he has really developed in his confidence to meet new people/make new friends.”

The over night forest school camp will run from 11am on 11 July and places are available now to book now.
